What Is A Leader's Most Important Job?

A Leader’s Most Important Job Is To Get Results.

How are they going to do that?

With all the urgency on getting results, we still find company after company not getting the results that they want.

They have a clear vision of what they want to achieve (GOALS) and what they want to be like (CULTURE), and most are also reasonably effective at developing strategies to execute on their vision.

Presentations are created, posters are put-up in the lunchroom, company meetings are held, etc. However, most companies struggle to see results from these strategies – they see the same behaviors, the same results.

Something is missing – They are not getting the alignment they need between what they want and what their people are doing.

What's missing?

The missing link is COMPETENCIES

Competencies define a specific set of behaviors that are most directly linked to performance and success.

What’s missing is a clear description of the BEHAVIORS that are needed to implement the Strategy and achieve the Vision.  As long as people are unclear about the behavior that is needed, they will stick to the old Culture and ways of doing things.

This is not a description of what people are doing now (necessarily) or
what was successful in the past (like job descriptions), it is describing what it takes to be successful in the new paradigm – the new VISION & STRATEGY and the CULTURE that makes it work.

Competencies are the link from your Vision, Strategy and Desired Culture to your key people systems and processes.
If the Talent Management processes in the organization do not revolve around the Competencies that are needed to drive the Strategy and Vision, then they are NOT ALIGNED and are not creating the value they could.
